Most players would opt for more mobility over the bulkier option of a full shoulder pad, it really is personal preference and whether you need more protection from checks. Shoulder pads are mandatory within North America where the spec was updated starting January 1, 2022, USA Lacrosse, NFHS & NCAA are all requiring players to wear chest protectors or shoulder pads that meet the new NOCSAE ND200 standard. Within the rest of the lacrosse playing World shoulder pads are not mandatory so players who do choose to wear them can still wear older models.
