Men's Lacrosse Sticks FAQs

Is it better to buy a complete lacrosse stick or buy the head and handle separately?

It really depends on your level of play and your budget. If you are looking for a entry level lacrosse stick then you should defiantly consider buying a whole stick as it is nice and easy to purchase when you are new to the sport. If you are picking up lacrosse at University then we'd recommend not buy the cheaper complete sticks as they are really designed for youth players, invested in the mid price completes as a minimum as they will hold up better as an adult playing against other adults but remember as a contact sport lacrosse sticks can still bend or break. If you are a more experienced lacrosse player then buying a new lacrosse stick in components will give you the ability to build a more bespoke stick suitable to your position and style of play.

Are men's lacrosse sticks position specific?

The short answer is yes. As a defender you'll want a lacrosse head that if stiff and usually a little wider in order to make checks, pick up ground balls and intercept passes. Attackers often want sticks that have a quick release to feed and shoot, they usually look for a lower pocket which can suit one handed cradling. Players allow tend to want a tighter face shape which can aid ball retention and allow enhance your shooting ability as an attacking player.

Are complete sticks just for beginners?

There are many great complete men's lacrosse stick options available these days that cater for a wider range of skill levels meaning that as a more experienced player you can still have the ease of buying a complete stick. No matter whether you're a new player or an International player, our staff are on hand to provide you with expert advice when it comes to purchasing a new lacrosse stick.

How long should a lacrosse stick last?

It's important to buy the correct level of stick for your level of play. A cheap entry stick designed for youth players will not last very long when playing adult lacrosse, this is a common mistake made by University students when they first get in to the sport. If you invest a little more then you will get a better product. The pocket of your lacrosse stick is a little bit like tyres on a car, the more milage you do then the quicker they'd need replacing but they also need maintaining. If you think it's time to have your lacrosse stick restrung but are unable to do it yourself then don't hesitate to contact us here at Northern Soul as we have some of the best stringers in Europe on our staff.

Will a new lacrosse stick need to be broken in?

All modern sticks will come broken in, however, a quick wall ball session will break in a stick and get you used to how it performs. Depending on the type of mesh in the head it is worth keeping an eye on pocket depth in order to maintain a legal head, nobody wants to have a goal cancelled due to illegal stick.
